Description

1907 High Relief Double Eagle, MS64
Wire Rim, CAC, Green Label Holder

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS64 PCGS. CAC. This is a beautifully struck and well preserved example of the highly coveted Saint-Gaudens High Relief double eagle. Luminous satin luster yields distinct faint die polish lines in the fields, indicating a relatively early die state. Every design element is sharply brought up, showing the full extent of this version of Saint-Gaudens' design. A few faint grazes are all that deny Gem classification.

This piece illustrates well the stacking problem that the "knife rim" effect produced for the Mint. Due to the high relief of the design, High Relief double eagles had to be struck multiple times. During this process, metal from the planchet was squeezed between the die faces and the collar, creating an elevated knife rim that precluded proper stacking. The planchet upset was changed later to remedy the problem, but the Wire Edge coins are much more plentiful today. This piece displays a complete and pronounced wire rim. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder.(Registry values: N7079)
