Description

1908-D With Motto Twenty, MS66
Important Transitional Issue
Seldom Seen Finer

1908-D $20 Motto MS66 PCGS. Long Rays Obverse. In comparison to its 1908 No Motto Philadelphia counterpart that was represented by thousands of coins in the Wells Fargo Hoard, the 1908-D With Motto Saint-Gaudens double eagle is elusive. Lightly abraded examples are usually available, but for the quality-conscious collector, a Gem representative will prove challenging to locate; Premium Gem examples are rare, and finer pieces are prohibitively so.

The present piece is a delight to behold, showcasing vibrant orange-gold luster and incredibly bold detail -- all four fingers on Liberty's torch hand are delineated. A loupe reveals trivial contact on the high points of the breast and knee, but there is no indication of rub. This is a genuinely attractive Premium Gem example of this conditionally rare date. Population: 38 in 66 (3 in 66+), 4 finer (9/25).
