Description

1909/8 Double Eagle, MS64
Lustrous Saint-Gaudens Twenty

1909/8 $20 FS-301 MS64 PCGS. The 1909/8 is the only Saint-Gaudens overdate and it is most often seen in XF or AU condition -- often enough that it doesn't command a significant premium. The situation changes at the Uncirculated level, where coins finer than Select Uncirculated become decidedly more challenging. From a mintage of 161,215 pieces for the 1909 date, PCGS reports just 27 examples in Gem and Premium Gem overdate coins finer than the present piece (9/25).

This example is absolutely Choice with the devices displaying sharp definition. The vibrant orange-gold surfaces show soft hints of lilac in the protected spaces. Full, frosty luster is prevalent and delivers an extravagant cartwheel effect. A few very small contact marks on the eagle's wings and one under Liberty's right (facing) arm are noticed under a loupe and account for the grade. This coin is an attractive MS64 that should please even the most particular collector of Saint-Gaudens twenties.
