Description

Attractive Mid-Grade 1855-C Gold Dollar

1855-C G$1 VF30 PCGS. This example is a bit better struck than the piece graded VF25 by PCGS although there is some weakness seen on the lettering from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock; the date is full and the mintmark is sharp. For a well-circulated 1855-C, this piece is surprisingly clean and has genuinely choice surfaces. With the exception of some clash marks on the obverse, there are virtually no marks or hairlines visible to the naked eye. While not much luster remains, flashes of reflectiveness can be seen in the protected areas when the coin is tilted. The color is a pleasing natural medium reddish-orange hue. This is really about as choice a middle grade 1855-C gold dollar as one might hope to find and it would be an excellent choice for the collector seeking an affordable example of this popular one-year type.
