Description

1865 Seated Dime, PR67
Tied for Finest at PCGS and NGC

1865 10C F-102, R.4, PR67 PCGS. An upper-left to lower-right die scratch above the tip of the shield and die rust on the shield and gown attribute the Fortin variety. Just 500 proofs were struck for this scarce end-of-war issue, when the Mint dusted off some rusted dies, polished the accessible areas, and struck a small mintage. Planchet preparation was less than proof quality as well, since this example shows faint roller marks on the obverse portrait. Even so, glorious toning envelops both sides of this Superb Gem, with lemon-gold margins merging with blue, violet, and magenta centers. The fields are deeply mirrored and pristine. Population: 3 in 67, 0 finer (6/15).
