Description
1924-S Double Eagle, MS64
Rare Any Finer
1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Most surviving 1924-S double eagles
are in circulated grades or the low end of the Mint State spectrum.
In Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, Roger Burdette writes, "Only
a handful of largely unblemished coins are known and it is probable
these came from the San Francisco Mint in 1924 and the pyx coins
remaining in Philadelphia. All the remaining pieces of this large
mintage were probably melted into bars."This near-Gem example is just outside of the elite Gem population, being among the finest pieces typically available to most collectors. PCGS reports only nine numerically finer pieces (9/25). The strike is impressively strong throughout, especially on the torch and holding hand. Wheat-gold luster is original, showing soft frost on each side. Scattered small abrasions account for the grade.
