Description

1877 Cent, Red and Brown Gem
Eye-Appealing Series Key

1877 1C MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. The famously low-mintage 1877 Indian cent is the Philadelphia key to the series, and high-grade examples enjoy perpetual demand. This strikingly patterned Red and Brown Gem is sure to be many a numismatist's "dream coin," though of course only one bidder can win it. Rich blue-brown and violet shadings occupy roughly half of the surface area with fresh copper-gold and orange hues gracing the rest. A partial woodgrain effect is noted in places such as the upper-right obverse and lower-right reverse. A shallow hidden scrape in the left obverse field below the A in STATES contributes to the grade, but the arm's-length eye appeal for both sides is magnificent. Population: 87 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red and Brown, 7 finer (7/19).
Ex: Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2013), lot 5519.
