Description

1873 Closed 3 Nickel, MS66
Scarce, Low-Production Issue

1873 5C Closed 3 MS66 PCGS. It is immediately apparent why this date logotype was changed in early 1873, it really does look like an 8. As expected, the number struck is much lower, the availability is lower, and the value significantly higher. Numerous spindly die cracks are seen around the margin on the obverse but none are present on the reverse, leading to the conclusion that an old obverse die was paired with a new reverse. Medium-density rose-gray patina covers each side with bright, satiny luster seen just below the toning. Population: 25 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (7/19).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 3801, Greysheet# 2877)

Weight: 5.00 grams

Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
