Description

1877-CC Five Dollar, XF45
Challenging Frontier Gold Issue

1877-CC $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-B. Ex: Rian's Bequest. As with other contemporary Carson City half eagle issues, the 1877-CC claims a low mintage (8,680 coins) and a correspondingly low survivorship of 130 to 165 examples. This XF45 five dollar gold piece clearly saw circulation on the frontier but thankfully was set aside at some point, whether intentionally or by chance. Orange-gold surfaces maintain faint traces of luster around the stars, legends, and central devices. Scattered abrasions throughout. Population: 19 in 45, 33 finer (11/21).
From The Rian's Bequest Collection. (Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25X2, PCGS# 8343, Greysheet# 9064)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
