1793 C-3, B-3 Half Cent, MS64+ Brown
Third Finest of the Variety
Die State III Plate Coin

1793 1/2 C C-3, B-3, R.3, MS64+ Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Missouri Cabinet-Simpson. Breen Die State III and the plate coin in the Breen Half Cent Encyclopedia for that die state. Substantial die rust appears on the reverse of this Choice Mint State half cent. A Condition Census at PCGS Coin Facts ranks this piece as the third finest 1793 C-3 half cent. However, the provenance they report differs from the Missouri Cabinet catalog. The provenance of the two Missouri Cabinet coins, lots 4 and 5, has been confused for several decades since publication of the Breen Half Cent Encyclopedia in 1983. The top examples of the variety are:

MS66 Brown PCGS. T. James Clarke; Charles M. Williams (Numismatic Gallery, 12/1950), lot 659; Harold Bareford; William J. Bareford; Jules Reiver (6/1984); James R. McGuigan Collection.
MS65 Brown PCGS. Charles Morris Collection (S.H. & H. Chapman, 4/1905), lot 857; Allison W. Jackman Collection (Henry Chapman, 6/1918), lot 851; Virgil M. Brand (journal #87424); Brand Estate; B.G. Johnson; later, Douglas Weaver; George W. "Hank" Rodgers; R. Tettenhorst; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Missouri Cabinet (Goldberg Auctions, 1/2014), lot 4; D. In the Missouri Cabinet catalog, Bob Grellman notes that the edge lettering is blundered and reads TWO HUNIRED FOR A DOLLAR. This lovely chocolate and olive-brown half cent features frosty surfaces with delicate bluish overtones. Light tan on the reverse is faded from mint red. A thin fissure through the bottom of the date remains from the planchet before this piece was struck. A bold impression is nicely centered on the planchet, resulting in a high degree of eye appeal. Our EAC grade MS63. PCGS Date Population: 5 in 64 Brown (1 in 64+), 7 finer. PCGS C-3 Population: 2 in 64 Brown (1 in 64+), 2 finer (11/21). CAC: 4 in 64, 5 finer (12/21).
Ex: Howard R. Newcomb; B. Max Mehl (1935); Col. E.H.R. Green (6/8/1936); Green Estate (4/1943); Eric P. Newman and Burdette G. Johnson; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Missouri Cabinet (Goldberg Auctions, 1/2014), lot 5.
