Description

1880-CC Morgan, MS66+ Prooflike
VAM-6, 8/7 Low 7, Top 100 Variety
A Condition Census PCGS Example

1880-CC $1 8 Over Low 7, VAM-6, MS66+ Prooflike PCGS. CAC. Ex: JCS Collection. A Top 100 Variety. VAM-6 is one of the two famous, prominent overdate varieties of the 1880-CC Morgan dollar, known as the 8 Over Low 7 variety. VAM-5 is the 8 Over High 7 variant. VAM-6 is distinguishable to the unaided eye as the crossbar of a 7 crosses through the upper loop of the second 8, with the vertical visible within and below the lower loop. This variety is slightly scarcer than VAM-5, especially in Premium Gem and finer condition.

The present piece displays vibrant cartwheel luster beneath mirrored fields, complementing frost-white devices and exceptional preservation. Every detail is sharply brought up and the coin radiates originality. While enough VAM-5 coins exist in Superb Gem condition to be collectible in that grade by Registry specialists, VAM-6 is almost unknown that fine. For this variety, MS66+ is as good as it gets for most PCGS Registry Set collectors, and just a handful of these coins have earned a Prooflike designation. This is one of them, and it is a truly exceptional VAM-6 1880-CC dollar. Population: 6 in 66 (2 in 66+) Prooflike, 0 finer; 1 in 66 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 0 finer. CAC: 5 in 66, 0 finer (7/19).
