Description

1880-O Silver Dollar, MS65
Remarkable Registry Set Quality
A Condition Key Among Early Dates

1880-O $1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: JCS Collection. The scarcity of the 1880-O Morgan dollar in high grade belies the mintage of more than 5.3 million pieces. This date was represented in quantity in the Treasury releases of the 1960s, although virtually all of the coins that emerged were bagmarked. The 1880-O is one of the scarcest early-date Morgans in Gem condition. At PCGS, no Gems have earned a Prooflike or Deep Mirror Prooflike designation, and only a handful of the non-Prooflike Gems at that service feature CAC endorsement. This is one of those few coins.

In stark contrast to norms for O-mint dollars, this piece displays vibrant, frosty mint luster and impressively strong central detail. It is clear that our consignor had an eye for quality when selecting this piece. The fields are virtually pristine, and a few faint luster grazes on Liberty's cheek only appear when tilted to catch light. A pair of finer coins are reported at PCGS, although we have to wonder how they could possibly improve upon the quality of the present coin. Population: 48 in 65 (5 in 65+), 2 finer. CAC: 13 in 65, 1 finer (7/19).
