One of the Two Finest at PCGS/CAC

1880/79-S $1 Medium S, VAM-8, MS68 PCGS. CAC. Ex: JCS Collection. A Top 100 Variety. The overdate feature recognized by VAM specialists is the extra metal within the upper loop of the second 8. The 0 is also faintly doubled on its lower edge. VAM-8 shows a Medium S mintmark on the reverse, separating it from VAM-9 which shares this obverse. Offered here is a magnificent MS68 CAC example. It is tied with one other coin as the finest 1880/79-S dollar at PCGS (7/19). Dazzling, virtually flawless luster engulfs each side, yielding mirrorlike quality in the fields and frosty texture on the devices. Barely any trace of contact is discernible even with a strong loupe. Clearly, this coin could easily have gotten a Plus designation. Nonetheless, perhaps the CAC green label is more important. CAC: 2 in 68, 0 finer (7/19).
