Description

1856-S Five Dollar, AU55
Original Toning, Much Luster

1856-S $5 AU55 NGC. Large S. The 1856-S has the highest mintage of any San Francisco half eagle issue struck prior to 1878. Nonetheless, it is scarce relative to common No Motto issues such as the 1847, and it becomes rare at the Choice AU level. This orange-gold representative displays luster across the plumage, curls, stars, and letters. Marks are trivial aside from a pair of thin lines on the upper reverse field. Census: 35 in 55, 22 finer (5/25).(Registry values: P6)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UZ, PCGS# 8270, Greysheet# 9021)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
