Description

1818 B-2 Quarter, MS65
Impressive Near-Terminal Die State

1818 25C B-2, R.1, MS65 NGC. Tompkins Die State 5/4. impressively lustrous surfaces contain hints of rose and peach toning over otherwise silver-white surfaces. It is well-struck and pleasingly preserved with great eye appeal. The collector appeal is also strong on account of the very late die state. The obverse exhibits all cracks found on this variety, including the main crack over the cap extending to star 10 and then darting to the rim. This crack is joined to the rim by another crack at 12 o'clock. Additional minor cracks are noted. Clashing is even more prominent, with the entire outline of the eagle present in the fields. Similar clashing is present on the reverse, with significant outlines of the bust clashed in the field, although it is not as strong. The reverse crack from the rim through the lowest arrowhead is also present. Later die states are known, but not much later than this near-terminal specimen.
