Description

PR66 Cameo 1879 Trade Dollar
First of the Proof-Only Dates

1879 T$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. While 1878 is the first proof-only Philadelphia Trade dollar issue, the 1879 is far more famous, as it is the first date for which only proofs were coined (both Carson City and San Francisco made business strikes in 1878). With a generous mintage of 1,541 pieces, the 1879 Trade dollar is available for a price in most grades, though at the PR66 Cameo level seen here, it is a rarity. Strong silver mirrors have a delicate layer of gold-tinged gray patina, and while the well-defined devices are lightly frosted, the contrast is undeniable. A few tiny lint marks appear on each side. Census: 16 in 66 Cameo, 15 finer (10/10).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 27YR, PCGS# 87059, Greysheet# 7408)
