Description

1820 B-1 Quarter, MS64
Electrically Toned; CAC Approved
Fourth Finest in the Rea Census

1820 25C Large 0, B-1, R.4, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Russet and peach dominate the central regions, with brilliant electric-blue radiating from the peripheral design elements. Contact marks are nonexistent, and striking weakness trivially impacts the completeness of the design. Of the five die marriages of 1820 quarters, three different 0 punches were used in the date, leading to three Guide Book entries. The present Large 0 was used on B-1 and B-2, and the present B-1 is the scarcer of these two die marriages. This example is listed as the fourth finest known in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian census, behind a PR67, an MS65, and a PR64 example. Rounding out the Mint State population is a single MS60 survivor. This makes the B-1 the second rarest 1820 die marriage in Mint State according to that census, behind only the B-5, a known rarity in any grade. The paucity of Mint State survivors makes the present offering an important opportunity for the series specialist.
