Description

1918/7-S Quarter, Champagne-Toned MS63
Above-Average Quality in All Respects

1918/7-S 25C FS-101 MS63 NGC. The 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter is the only issue in the series besides the famous 1916 that is a "stopper" in low circulated grades. About Uncirculated examples are infrequently seen, and Mint State pieces are exceedingly scarce. In Full Head, the 1918/7-S is far out of reach for most collectors.

The mintage for the overdate is unknown, although it was undoubtedly low -- J.H. Cline estimates as little as "2,500? pieces." A single Type Two 1917-S head die was rehubbed with the 1918 date, producing the overdate. All known examples display some degree of clashing with heavy die striations in the fields, suggesting that the overdated die was either damaged shortly after its creation or was even worn prior to being rehubbed. Whatever the case, the 1918/7-S is almost unobtainable with a well-defined strike. This Select Mint State example is high-end to the perception of most collectors. Liberty's head is slightly sharper than average but still shy of full, and the eagle and shield exhibit predictable incompleteness. The overdate feature is bold. This appealing, satiny example displays a blush of light golden toning without any major abrasions. Census: 8 in 63, 21 finer (5/16).
