Description

1794 Half Dollar, VF Details
Overton-105a, Scarcer Late Die State

1794 50C O-105a, T-3, R.5 -- Repaired -- NGC Details. VF. Tompkins Die State 1/3. This coin is actually quite pleasing to the naked eye. The obverse shows a bold rim and strong hair detail on the central portrait. The reverse is boldly defined around the borders, but shows considerable weakness over the upper interior due to die failure -- characteristic of a sinking die in the late die state. A loupe reveals tooling in the obverse fields -- apparently, to remove marks or graffiti -- but the evidence is well-hidden by medium olive and golden-gray toning.
