Description

1812 Half Dollar, O-107, MS65
Old-Time Toning

1812 50C Large 8, O-107, R.1, MS65 NGC. An available Large 8 variety, but rarely encountered at the Gem grade level. This representative is in an early die state, without the later-appearing lump in the reverse field adjacent to the eagle's left (facing) wing. A small tine off the upper-right corner of the shield confirms the attribution of the die, while the obverse shows a distinct date placement: the 1 high, with all four numerals leaning noticeably left. Visual attributes of this piece include rich, satiny luster with warm amber-gold toning that deepens to show small violet and blue tinges near the borders. Several right-hand stars are soft, but the strike is otherwise sharp. Census of all Large 8 varieties: 13 in 65, 15 finer (5/16).
