Description
1819/8 O-106 Half Dollar, MS64
Large 9, Smooth, Lustrous Surfaces
1819/8 50C Large 9, O-106, R.4, MS64 PCGS. A scarce die
marriage representing the Large 9 overdates, with flat-top 1s and
an "L-shaped" closure to the 9 in the date from the remnant of an
underdigit 8. A small die lump above the second 1 resembles an
accent mark. A blending of olive-gray and peach-gold shades cover
the lustrous, minimally marked surfaces. The strike is pleasingly
bold on the drapery folds, hair curls, and stars. A non-important
streak of struck-in grease at the denomination is the only mark to
mention. Steve Herrman's Spring, 2016 Condition Census lists a
single MS65+ coin (Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection) as the finest
O-106, with three MS63 coins vying for next-finest. This near-Gem
example ranks in a tie for second place in the census for the
variety. Population (all Large 9 overdates): 9 in 64, 7 finer
(5/16).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24FC, Variety PCGS# 39562, Base PCGS# 6119, Greysheet# 194230)
