Description

1800 BD-2 Five Dollar, MS62
Fully Struck, Semireflective Fields

1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. This late die state was probably terminal, and is characterized by the short die crack from the tip of the eagle's wingtip to the adjoining dentil. Although there are five varieties known of the 1800 five dollar, only four are collectible. This Blunt 1 obverse was mated with four different reverse dies. This particular variety was struck before any of the other Blunt 1 combinations. Of the 7,500 to 12,500 pieces estimated minted of this die variety, it is estimated that around 200 examples are known today. Most likely the dies were lapped shortly before this coin was struck, as seen by the bright, semireflective fields on each side. The strike is complete throughout with especially noteworthy detail on the hair of Liberty. The bright yellow-gold surfaces show just a hint of light reddish patina.
