Description

1862 Seated Half, PR65
Brilliant With Traces of Tan Patina

1862 50C PR65 NGC. Proof output dropped by nearly 50% between 1861 and 1862 from 1,000 pieces to 550 coins. Demand for proofs began to cool in the early 1860s after a small proofing fee was introduced. This well-preserved Gem proof is mostly brilliant with daubs of tan patina around the edges and occasionally in the fields. The central motifs are frosted and untoned, giving each side a partial cameo effect. Fully struck relief elements, though expected, are nonetheless appealing. Census: 23 in 65, 7 finer (6/16).
