Description
1913-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS65
Low-Mintage Issue, CAC Approved
1913-S $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Duckor-Fox. Only 34,000
Saint-Gaudens double eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint
in 1913, one of the lowest mintages of the series. The coins were
all delivered on December 31 and it is hard to understand why such
a small quantity was produced at that time. The 1913-S is not as
elusive as the small production total would suggest in lower Mint
State grades, but collectors have always been drawn to the issue
because of the low mintage. The 1913-S is rare in MS65 condition,
however, and finer coins are almost never available. This
well-detailed Gem displays lustrous greenish-gold surfaces, with no
mentionable distractions and outstanding eye appeal. Population: 23
in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 0 finer (1/20)Ex: Dr. and Mrs. Steven Duckor Collection (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 4621.
David Akers (2008) Comments:
Obviously, mintage figures are a poor indicator of rarity in the 20th century gold series. The foregoing comments are not meant to denigrate the 1913-S, for this is a genuinely scarce issue in all Mint State grades. In addition, the 1913-S is rarer in high grades than the 1929, 1931, 1931-D and 1932 - all four of which are heavily melted issues that are more instantly recognizable as rarities in most numismatic circles. A small number of Gems are known, but the 1913-S is unobtainable any finer than MS66.
