Description

Exceptional 1899-O Half Dollar, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified

1899-O 50C MS66 PCGS. The mintage of 1.7 million 1899-O half dollars was sufficient to ensure that enough Mint State pieces have survived for any collector to acquire one, as long as quality is unimportant. However, Gem examples are elusive, with just 12 PCGS certified submissions grading MS65 or finer. If a bold strike is a further requirement, then top grade examples of this issue are every bit as rare as any other date in the series.
This coin from the Dale Friend Collection is the total package, with exceptional satin luster, brilliant silver surfaces, and faint champagne toning. The strike is wonderful, with only the slightest weakness on the hair behind Liberty's eye, and at the junction of the wing and right shield. Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (10/08).
