Description

1884 Gold Dollar, MS68
Seemingly Unmatched Visual Appeal
Recut Date

1884 G$1 MS68 PCGS. All four date numerals are noticeably recut, with the widest spread seen on the 18. This interesting variety is unlisted in the Cherrypickers' reference, and is diagnostic of a proof die for this year. Breen suggested this proof die was retired to business strike production, and the existence of this piece seems to confirm that theory. As a date, the 1884 gold dollar is moderately plentiful in most grades, but is exceedingly rare at the lofty MS68 level. This piece showcases fully defined motifs and beautifully preserved semiprooflike fields. Shades of honey and apricot-gold color emblazon each side. Population: 7 in 68 (1 in 68+), 0 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25DN, PCGS# 7585, Greysheet# 8047)

Weight: 1.67 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
