Description

1797 Dollar, Choice XF
9x7 Stars, Small Letters, B-2, BB-72

1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters, B-2, BB-72, R.4, XF45 PCGS. CAC. A 9x7 Stars obverse paired with a Small Letters reverse that is diagnostic. Q. David Bowers writes of the variety in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: "Of all 1797 varieties, the BB-72 is at once the rarest, best known, and most sought after. ... Indeed, it may well be the most famous variety after 1794 and before 1804."

This Choice XF survivor is well-preserved and attractive relative to most of its peers. Glimmers of luster appear at the margins, and dappled olive-gray, deep violet, and steel shadings cover the rest of the coin. Minimally marked and attractive, an entirely pleasing coin for the grade.
