Description

1797 B-1, BB-73 Silver Dollar, XF45
Exceptional Large Letters Type

1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Large Letters, B-1, BB-73, R.3, XF45 PCGS. The Draped Bust obverse was introduced in 1795 with a 15 stars obverse design. The same star count appeared on 1796 silver dollars, then increased to 16 stars for the 1797 silver dollars to reflect the statehood of Tennessee. Two different obverse dies were used -- one with nine stars to the left and seven to the right, and the other with 10 stars to the left and six to the right. Each is considered a separate subtype of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design, along with both Large and Small Letters reverses for the 9x7 configuration. This Choice XF Large Letters specimen is mostly light silver at the centers with splashes of heather in the fields and steel-blue toning at the borders. The surfaces are smooth and attractive with traces of remaining silver luster and only minor abrasions. Population: 33 in 45, 45 finer (5/16).
Ex: Sacramento ANA Signature (Heritage, 3/2011), lot 4469.
