Description

1800 AMERICAI Dollar, XF40
Scarce B-11, BB-191, Wide Date, Low 8

1800 $1 AMERICAI, B-11, BB-191, R.4, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. This is by far the scarcer of the two AMERICAI varieties, with a stray engraver's mark to the right of the final A in AMERICA, loosely resembling an "I." The BB-191 shares the Wide Date, Low 8 obverse with the BB-190 variety. Rich purple-gray patina in the fields contrasts sharply against the light, silver-gray color on the devices for a pronounced "circulation cameo" effect. A few small, deep areas of toning visit each side of this crisply struck early dollar, most noticeably on Liberty's cheek and in the reverse stars. Faint lines and a peppering of tiny marks are noted on the obverse and above eagle's head and neck. BB-191 is one of the more challenging issues for the year. Population (both AMERICAI varieties): 11 in 40, 37 finer (5/16).
