Description

1858 Liberty Twenty, AU55
Strong for the Grade

1858 $20 AU55 NGC. The 1858 double eagle was not well-saved, and few high-grade examples survive despite a mintage of 211,714 coins. Coin collecting as a pastime was just taking off in 1858. The Mint offered proofs to the public at no extra charge that year. Seemingly, there was no need or desire to set aside Mint State examples. Consequently, the 1858 is very rare in Uncirculated condition and even Choice About Uncirculated examples are somewhat scarce. This AU55 coin is minimally marked for the grade and well-struck, with original rich and partially lustrous orange-gold color.
