Description

1875 50C PR64 NGC. CAC. WB-101. Just 700 proofs were struck in 1875, about average for the era except for a larger mintage in the centennial year of 1876. Gunmetal-blue accents at the borders embrace wheat-gold mirrors in the fields that extend across the lightly frosted portrait of Liberty. The reverse shows lively bands of colors that include electric-blue, violet, and yellow-gold. The strike is bold throughout except at the high points of Liberty's top curls, the eagle's left talon, and the rock support beneath Liberty's foot. Excellent eye appeal exists for this near-Gem proof, CAC endorsed. Census: 40 in 64 (1 in 64 ), 37 finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 10 finer (4/16).
