Description
1878 Liberty Twenty, MS62
Attainable Type Three Double Eagle
1878 $20 MS62 NGC. A vibrant honey-gold palette on rich,
frosty luster reveals hints of lilac and olive upon viewing on this
well-struck Liberty double eagle. A small, russet die grease spot
appears between obverse stars 2 and 3, otherwise abrasions and
imperfections are minor and consistent with the grade. This example
is NGC's VP-005 variety, which features a repunching of the 878 in
the date and doubling in LIBERTY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD
WE TRUST, and the reverse stars. Double eagles from this issue are
generally available through MS62, but finer pieces become
challenging as NGC reports only 46 numerically finer coins,
presenting this example as a popular alternative for type
collectors (4/25).(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26B3, PCGS# 8985, Greysheet# 9816)
