Description

1888 Silver Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Rarely Finer

1888 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Ex: JFS Collection. Breen-5600, described by him as "very rare." It was circa 1888 that the quality of proof coins reached a low level, leading Harlan P. Smith to make a formal complaint about this quality. As a rule, proof coins from this period are not nearly as nice as those of earlier years, but the blazing eye appeal of this specimen marks it as an outstanding exception. Consider this to be an excellent opportunity as it may be a long wait before a similar example appears on the market.

This Gem displays rich gold toning toward the borders and lighter champagne at the centers. The design features are quite sharp, especially at the centers, although a few hair strands over the ear are merged together. Bold contrast completes this Cameo coin. Population: 8 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (5/16).
Ex: Heritage (1/2005), lot 11966; JFS Collection (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 7047.
