Description
1800 BD-1 Ten Dollar, AU58
Sharply Struck and Still Lustrous
1800 $10 BD-1, High R.3, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State c/e. Struck from a single die pair, the 1800 eagle is both
popular and available to collectors. The reverse die was carried
over from 1799 and used again for the 1801 BD-1 variety, while the
1800 obverse was used to strike an initial quantity of 1800-dated
pieces, then reused after an early failure of the 1801 obverse die.
Thus, some of the reported 1801 mintage included 1800-dated
pieces. This is a sharply struck and attractive example of the late die stage, with die-clashed dentils barely visible, seen most easily above the first T in STATES. A trace of wear and a few light abrasions indicate brief circulation, although mint luster remains across most of the semireflective fields. A heavy die crack above LIBERTY portends the eventual demise of the obverse die. Population: 26 in 58, 47 finer (7/19).
