Description
1870 Half Eagle, Rare AU58
Underrated Philadelphia Issue
1870 $5 AU58 NGC. The scant mintage of just 4,000 coins was
largely ignored by collectors of the day, who sought proofs in
preference to business strikes. PCGS estimates survivorship of a
mere 55 coins, a stunningly small number even when the low mintage
is considered. Grading events tell the same story, with PCGS
reporting just two Mint State coins while NGC lists no Uncirculated
pieces. This near-Mint example is as close to Uncirculated as can
be expected, with a sharp strike and partially lustrous, deep-gold
color. Numerous small marks and abrasions dot the surfaces but no
major contacts disrupt the appeal. Census: 9 in 58, 0 finer
