Description
Premium Gem 1873 Closed 3 Three Cent Nickel Tied for Finest Certified
1873 3CN Closed 3 MS66 PCGS. Unlike the 1873 logotypes on the Cent and Double Eagle, one can use the naked eye to distinguish between the Open 3 and Closed 3 subtypes of the Three Cent Nickel. The Closed 3 is similar to an 8 when viewed without magnification, hence the complaint by the Chief Coiner on January 18 to led to a change of the logotype. Since the modification was early in the year, the Closed 3 is the scarcer subtype for business strikes. This sharply struck piece has battleship-gray color and vibrant cartwheel luster. The surfaces are unabraded, although faint clash marks (as produced) are noted on each side. Population: 7 in 66, none finer (1/05).From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set.(#3739) (Registry values: N2998)
