Description
1854 Double Eagle, Scarce Mint State Example
1854 $20 Small Date MS61 NGC. Of the 17 Type One Double Eagles, the 1854 is the thirteenth rarest overall. While common in nearly all circulated grades, it is much harder to locate in Uncirculated than usually acknowledged. An estimated 20-25 Mint State coins are known, nearly all falling in the MS60-62 grade range. In MS62, the 1854 is a very scarce and extremely undervalued issue. This piece is very sharply defined and shows orange-gold tinted mint luster. There are no obvious abrasions on either side of this lovely piece. Struck from dies not mentioned in Breen. The bottom of the 1 was first punched in too low and the tops of the 54 were first punched in too high relative to the prominent digits.
The present specimen is in the Condition Census and is the equal of the Bass III: 777 coin that brought a strong $10,350 in May 2000. This is the Small Date variety. A Large Date variety is also known, but is very scarce in all grades and extremely rare above AU55.
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268P, PCGS# 8911, Greysheet# 9789)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
