Description

Superb Gem 1885 Three Cent Nickel Tied for Finest Certified

1885 3CN MS67 PCGS. Apricot and gunmetal-gray colors grace this sharply struck and shimmering Superb Gem. Unlike the 1886, the 1885 was not a proof-only issue. However, just 1,000 business strikes were coined, and these are far less often encountered (in any grade) than their proof counterparts. The advent of the Registry Set has emphasized the value of the late date business strike Three Cent Nickels, which were undervalued for many years in favor of proofs. As of (1/05), PCGS has certified a mere 39 pieces in Mint State, and at the extraordinary level of MS67, only two have been certified with none finer.
