Description

1798 B-28, BB-118 Bust Dollar, XF40
Near-Terminal Reverse Die State

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-28, BB-118, R.3, XF40 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State V. The reverse die soon met its demise and appears only on the present variety. The obverse die appears on multiple varieties. Two prominent, parallel die cracks to the left of the eagle's tail help identify the BB-118 die pair. The late state of the reverse is confirmed by a large piece of the die absent between the two cracks, and sinking of the adjacent area. The obverse is likewise cracked below and through the date, to star 1, and well into the left field. Brown and tan toning blankets both sides with traces of remaining gold luster. The coin is sharply defined for the grade, although some of the field stars are weak as normal for the variety. This attractive early dollar is the Bowers Encyclopedia plate coin to illustrate the advanced state of the BB-118 reverse die.
