Description

1844-D Two and a Half, AU53
Difficult Dahlonega Date

1844-D $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 5-I. All Dahlonega two and a half dollar issues are rare, and the 1844-D is no exception. Just 17,332 pieces were produced, and attractive examples are desired by Southern gold specialists. This lemon-gold example has a bold peripheral strike, though central elements are incompletely brought up. Marks are fewer than is customary, though we mention a solitary horizontal line on Liberty's jaw.
