1918-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar, MS66
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS

1918-S 50C MS66 PCGS. The U.S. economy was experiencing a wartime boom in 1918, as World War I reached its climax. As the largest silver denomination being produced at that time, there was a great demand for half dollars in the national economy. Accordingly, the San Francisco Mint struck an enormous mintage of 10.2 million fifty cent pieces that year. The great majority of the huge production total was released into circulation to fulfill its intended purpose and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1918-S is easily located in lower circulated grades today, but it is a prime condition rarity in high grade.

In addition to its low availability in Mint State, the 1918-S is known as a weakly struck issue. Almost all examples seen show some incompleteness on Liberty's head and wreath hand, and the eagle's leg seldom shows fine detail in the feathers. Fortunately, the 1918-S typically shows strong mint luster, to compensate for the typical softness on the devices. Although a number of coins exist with vibrant mint luster and minimal surface marks, these examples tend to have flat strikes, and very few have been graded finer than MS65.

The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with a much better-than-average strike. Although some areas show touches of the softness this issue is known for, there is at least some emerging detail on Liberty's head and wreath hand. The well-preserved surfaces radiate strong, satiny mint luster, under attractive shades of champagne-gold toning. We expect intense competition from series specialists when this lot is called. Housed in a new 30th Anniversary green label holder. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (7/16).(Registry values: N7079)
