Description
1859-S Eagle, Attractive AU50
Low-Mintage S-Mint, Few Finer at PCGS
1859-S $10 AU50 PCGS. The 1859-S is one of a group of
elusive, underrated, low-mintage S-mint eagle issues that bookend
the Civil War, also including the 1860-S, 1864-S and 1865-S, and
the 1866-S No Motto. The 1859-S saw a mintage of 7,000 pieces only
a decade after the great California Gold Rush, and certified
survivors today average only XF40. PCGS has never seen a Mint State
example and estimates that only 40 to 60 pieces survive in all
grades. This AU50 PCGS-graded piece shows the usual Large S
mintmark on surfaces that are well-struck and only lightly abraded.
Ample remaining luster and attractive orange-gold patina make this
a compelling potential acquisition. Population: 5 in 50, 3 finer
(1/14).From Christopher Bently's Nob Hill Collection.(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2643, PCGS# 8630, Greysheet# 9457)
