Description
1860-S Liberty Head Ten, Choice AU
Highly Underrated Issue
Only 35 or 45 Coins Extant
1860-S $10 AU55 NGC. The 1860-S is, without question, a
terrifically underrated, underappreciated, and undervalued date in
the series. With a mintage of 5,000 coins and a survivorship of 35
or 45 pieces, this is actually one of the rarest Liberty Head tens.
The issue was unknown in Mint State prior to the recovery of the
S.S. Republic treasure (two Uncirculated coins were found).
This remains a major rarity in Choice AU condition. It has been a
few years since a comparable example was made available. The stars and olive leaves may be incomplete, but the rest of this important San Francisco eagle is boldly defined. Sharp detail is especially evident on the reverse. The surfaces display rich yellow-gold color and bright semiprooflikeness is seen in the fields from the initial die polish. A remarkably clean example. Census: 1 in 55, 7 finer (1/18).
