Description

1855 Arrows Half Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Rare in All Grades

1855 50C Arrows PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. WB-101. Normal Date. The number of proof half dollars struck in 1855 is unknown but certainly small. Researchers differ on survival estimates, but it is a general consensus that likely little more than 20 coins are known. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert, in their Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, suggest possibly 20 Normal Date pieces survive along with at least three overdate coins, while Walter Breen (1988) says there may be 12 coins extant. PCGS currently estimates that 14 to 20 pieces survive of both varieties combined. We have handled 15 or 16 individual pieces at various times over the past 25 years.

The piece offered here is making its fourth appearance in our auctions and its first in nearly a decade. Both sides yield modest field-motif contrast with whispers of amber-gold and lilac toning that cling to the margins. Except for several stars, the design elements are sharp. A few wispy marks barely preclude Gem status. Population: 2 in 64 Cameo, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 64, 0 finer (2/18).
