1921-D Half Dollar, MS64+
A Key Date in This Popular Series

1921-D 50C MS64+ PCGS. One of the most popular 20th century series to collect by date and mintmark is the Walking Liberty half dollar. Struck from 1916 through 1947, this series was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and portrays what is considered one of the most beautiful representations of Liberty on a circulating United States coin. Liberty was first given a full-figure portrait on the 1836 Gobrecht dollar, and shortly thereafter on all silver denominations of the Seated Liberty series. The goal was to beautify America's coinage. But in 1892, the full-length figure of Liberty was replaced by a Caesar-looking Liberty head by the hand of Chief Engraver Charles Barber. The Barber design was one of utility, not inspiring much artistic appreciation at a time when sculptors such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens were being recruited to create beautifully rendered classical artwork in the public square. Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar replaced Barber's design in 1916. A full-length portrait of Liberty also appeared on the quarter dollar that year, joining a similar rendering of Liberty that had been on the double eagle since 1907.

The Walking Liberty half dollar series has only a few key dates, namely the 1921 issues from each of the three operating mints. The 1921-D boasts the lowest mintage of these at just 208,000 coins. This high-end near-Gem displays partial thumb separation and good head detail. A hint of light golden toning graces the satiny surfaces, and no major abrasions are present. PCGS lists 37 finer examples (3/18).(Registry values: N2998)
