Description
1857-C Gold Dollar, AU50
Original, Attractive and Scarce
1857-C G$1 AU50 PCGS. Winter-1. The first Type Three gold
dollars were minted in 1856, but the Charlotte Mint did not begin
producing the series until 1857. Using the updated design from
James Longacre, cleaner strikes were the goal. Sadly, the
modifications did little to improve Charlotte's production quality,
and this issue is known both for poor planchets and poorer striking
quality. This AU example features original orange-gold surfaces
with lovely undertones of olive and lilac. Trace amounts of luster
appear in the borders and the protected areas. Planchet issues are
seen on the obverse, with dentilation only slightly irregular. The
reverse shows no significant planchet issues, but an inconsistent
strike reveals weak and uneven dentils. Abrasions are typical of
the issue, none of which are significantly bothersome. AU-level
pieces are in demand as PCGS shows only five examples in Mint State
(6/25).(Registry values: N2998)From The Mark George Collection.
