Description

1874 No Period Trade Dollar, SP58
Rare With Specimen Designation

1874 T$1 No Period, JK-1, SP58 PCGS. The Type One Obverse hub lacked a period after FINE. The period was added by hand into many working dies, and varied in size and proximity to the E. On some working dies, the period was omitted altogether. The problem would be solved the next year, 1875, when the Type Two Reverse was introduced. Of greater interest to the bidder is the Specimen designation, due to its mattelike finish. PCGS has certified five 1874 Trade dollars as Specimen (12/25). This lot has dusky steel-gray, lavender, tan-brown, and ocean-blue toning. Marks are limited to a field line near the final A in AMERICA. Joe Kirchgessner lists three of 12 1874 die marriages as No Period. Reverse die cracks confirm a JK-1 attribution.
