1795 Half Eagle, BD-4, AU Details
Elusive First-Year Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-4, R.5 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. BD-4 is one of the more plentiful of the 12 1795 half eagle varieties, though its availability is only in relation to other rare early gold issues, as just 60 to 75 examples are believed extant in all grades. With such a low survival rate being among the higher for the issue, one begins to realize the scarcity of early gold varieties overall. BD-4 is the third and final use of this obverse die and the only use of this reverse, though a terminal die state surprisingly is not known for this variety. This example is unnaturally bright, due to old cleaning, though the yellow-gold patina is not much different in appearance than that of most other gold issues from this period. The extreme centers are not fully struck up, but actual wear is minimal. Some faint, old adjustment marks remain visible in the left obverse field upon close examination.
