Description
1872 Gold Dollar, MS67+
Only One Finer Example at PCGS
1872 G$1 MS67+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Akers/Carter.
Both sides of this glittering Superb Gem exhibit brilliant light
yellow surfaces with reflective fields and satin devices. The
strike is bold and the surfaces are virtually flawless.Variety and Die State: Breen-6087. Normal Dies. Struck from perfect dies exhibiting microscopic die polishing lines on the obverse.
Population (6/15): The finest at PCGS are nine submissions in MS67, this MS67+ coin, and one MS68. NGC has certified four pieces in MS67 through MS69, including one Prooflike piece each in MS67 and MS68.
Commentary: Unlike the previous few years, the 3,500 circulation strike gold dollars of 1872 were struck and delivered throughout the year; 1,000 were delivered March 18; 500 on October 21; and 2,000 on December 18. All 30 proofs were delivered on February 3, 1872. The high-grade (Gem or finer) rarity of this issue is similar to 1870, with examples appearing in our auctions about once a year; 21 such coins have been offered in 22 years.
Douglas Winter Commentary: This is the Amon Carter example, obtained out of the famous Stack's January 1984 auction by David Akers for a then-record price of $7,700 and held in his personal collection for nearly three decades before it was sold to Steve Duckor.
As a date, the 1872 is fairly easy to locate in grades up to MS64, but Gems are very scarce and Superb Gems are very rare. The finest known was recently sold as lot 1843 in the January 2015 Goldberg sale where it brought $35,250 in an MS68 PCGS holder; it is possible it was earlier graded MS69 NGC and sold by Superior, May 2005, lot 978 for $24,275. PCGS shows nine coins graded MS67, but that total is likely inflated by resubmissions; only the present coin has received a Plus designation.
A few small lines on the cheek are really all that keep this coin from being "as struck" and it is, in my opinion, clearly the second finest known.
Provenance: Amon G. Carter, Jr. Family Collection (Stack's, 1/1984), lot 508; purchased from David Akers.
