Description
1877 Gold Dollar, MS67+
Ex: David Akers' Personal Set
1877 G$1 MS67+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Akers. Gorgeous
splashes of blue-green, violet, and rose toning appear on the
brilliant, highly lustrous surfaces of this satiny Superb Gem. The
reflective fields provide an excellent backdrop for the frosty
devices. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are pristine with a
few trivial planchet flakes and other grade-consistent marks.Variety and Die State: Breen-6098. Normal Dies. Struck from perfect dies, this example shows no clash marks or other die anomalies.
Population (6/15): PCGS has certified a dozen MS67 examples, one MS67+, and three MS68. NGC reports 10 submissions graded MS68, including two each with the Star and Prooflike suffixes.
Commentary: The published mintage figure of 3,900 coins suggests that the 1877 gold dollar is a rare issue, although its survival rate and that of later-date coins is higher than for earlier years. However, the 1877 is hardly common, especially in high grades, as the population data suggest. In Superb Gem grades, a wait of a year or longer is necessary to find the right coin.
Douglas Winter Commentary: This issue appears to have seen limited circulation, as Mint State coins are available more often than circulated pieces. There are enough MS66 and MS67 coins around to satisfy collectors of high-end gold dollars, but PCGS has only graded three in MS68. The Duckor coin, previously part of David Akers' personal set of gold dollars, is the only MS67+ currently graded by PCGS.
This coin is notable for its stunning color. The rich hues it shows are unequalled on any other 1877 gold dollar I have seen.
In recent years, the only finer 1877 gold dollar to sell at auction was the MS68 PCGS-CAC coin that realized $21,150 as lot 3337 in the September 2014 Heritage sale. A second MS68 PCGS-CAC piece is in the Simpson Collection.
Provenance: Purchased from David Akers.
